Today, we share this post in celebration of Susan LaJoie and all the hard work she has done throughout her career to improving rural pediatric care in Gadsden County.

Where do you work?

I have worked for the Florida State University College of Medicine for the past 12 years.  The program is a partnership with Gadsden DOH and Gadsden County School Board in the school-based health program.  We see patients aged 6 weeks through 21 years.  All services are free, as we are funded by the FSU Dance Marathon.   This program was developed to address health disparities in children.

What is your specialty area?

I am Board Certified in Family Practice through the AANP, however, most patients that I see are pediatric.

Why did you want to become a nurse practitioner?

I wanted to become a nurse practitioner to address health disparities and access to care issues.  While working as an RN, I realized that I wanted a more active role in inpatient care.  I knew that primary care offered me more autonomy as well as allowing me to practice the way I believe we should.

Is there a certain patient or experience that made you proud to be an NP?

Patient experiences that stand out are times when people have thanked me for “taking time” and “listening” to their story.  Being present is the greatest gift that we can offer someone in need, whether it is discussing mental health, cancer care or birth control options.

How has COVID-19 changed your practice?

Covid-19 forced the closure of in-person education last March, which in turn temporarily closed the school-based clinics.  This greatly affected children by decreasing access to care and food.  Sadly, we were unable to offer the migrant children’s summer school clinic.  Fortunately, the clinics re-opened in July and we are back to seeing children.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Becoming a Nurse Practitioner was the absolute best choice for me.  I love my job and I am proud to call myself an NP.  NPs serve a vital role in inpatient care.  We must remember our calling, power and patient advocacy talents.  Congratulations to my fellow Nurse Practitioners on our week of celebration!
